Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 2026

Introduction

CinemaIQ ('we', 'our', or 'us') is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our platform. By using CinemaIQ you agree to the practices described here.

Information We Collect

We collect the following categories of information:

  • Account data — your email address, display name, avatar, and bio when you register.
  • Usage data — movies and TV shows you log, ratings, reviews, watchlist items, and watch history. Some of this (see Public Information) may be shown publicly.
  • Technical data — browser type, operating system, and IP address for security and analytics purposes.
  • Error reports — crash logs and diagnostic data collected through Sentry to help us fix bugs.

Public Information

Some information you create on CinemaIQ can be made public. By default, journal reviews and ratings are set to public, and you can change this with the Public/Private toggle on each entry. When a review is public, it may appear on your public profile (cinemaiq.app/u/your-username) and on public film pages, alongside your display name. These pages can be visited by anyone and may be indexed by search engines such as Google. If you set your profile to private, your name is not attached to your public reviews. You can make any entry private at any time by editing it; it will then be removed from public pages. Reviews you mark as private are never shown publicly.

How We Use Your Information

Your information is used to:

  • Provide and operate the CinemaIQ service, including your journal, watchlist, and profile.
  • Generate personalised movie and TV recommendations based on your watch history and ratings.
  • Detect and prevent fraud, abuse, and unauthorised access.
  • Improve our features and user experience through aggregated, anonymised analytics.

Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party providers who may process your data:

  • SupabaseHosts our database and handles authentication. Your data is stored in Supabase's infrastructure.
  • TMDBProvides movie and TV show data. We do not share your personal information with TMDB.
  • SentryReceives error reports that may include device and session metadata for debugging.

Each provider has its own privacy policy. We encourage you to review them.

Data Retention

We retain your account and activity data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will remove your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required by law to retain it longer.

Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Request correction of inaccurate data.
  • Request deletion of your account and associated data.
  • Receive a copy of your data in a machine-readable format.

CinemaIQ uses browser local storage to save your theme preference and session information. We do not use third-party advertising cookies.

CinemaIQ is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with their data, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
